The Deaf Studies program was approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board as a 36-hour Master of Arts (MA) degree program in 2020. The 36- hour program consists of 24 hours of core courses, 6 hours of statistic/research courses, and 6 hours of thesis credits. The program focuses on theory and research in the field of Deaf Studies, including courses in Deaf History, ASL Literature, and ASL linguistics. Obtaining a MA degree provides the credentials to teach ASL at a community college or enter into a doctoral degree in Deaf Studies and Deaf Education.

Learning Outcomes
Graduate students’ progress through the MA program will include accomplishing four PLOs.
They include: Apply the basic principles of inquiry and research design to educational research;
- Demonstrate “T” learning; the top of the T demonstrates breadth in knowledge about Deaf Studies and Deaf Education while the stem of the T demonstrates depth of knowledge in the cognate/dissertation area;
- Demonstrate an ability of ASL/English bilingual fluency in academic content; and
- Publish peer-reviewed and translational articles.
