Out-of-State Licensure and Certification Disclosure

Out-of-State Licensure and Certification Disclosure

The information below indicates whether Lamar University’s professional licensure programs meet the educational requirements for licensure or certification in each state. Programs that result in a certificate from Lamar University but do not lead to professional licensure or certification through an external licensing entity are not included.

Lamar University programs that lead to professional licensure or certification are designed to meet the requirements for licensure in Texas. While many programs may also satisfy licensure requirements in other states, some states may require additional coursework, examinations, or other qualifications.

Students are encouraged to contact the appropriate state licensure or certification board before beginning an academic program to determine whether the program meets educational requirements in the state where they intend to pursue licensure or certification.

Relocating Mid-Program - A University Disclaimer and Warning!

If you are approved to enroll in a program out-of-state, you must re-verify with our offices prior to your move to a different state to ensure certification or licensure is possible in addition to completing the location verification form indicating your change of location.

Note for the Educational Diagnostician Certification:

Texas and New Mexico are the only states that offer the educational diagnostician certification area. In the remaining states, the educational diagnostician is referred to as a school psychologist.
Our program will not qualify you to become a school psychologist (only an educational diagnostician). Thus, it is highly probably that our program won’t reciprocate to other states and students should verify with the out-of-state officer.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

To obtain an RN license, candidates must pass a national licensure examination (NCLEX‑RN) administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Graduates from all U.S. states and territories take the same examination.

Graduates of our program may apply for initial RN licensure in Texas or in any other U.S. state. When applying for licensure outside of Texas, graduates submit a state‑specific application to the appropriate Board of Nursing, along with required documentation (e.g., official transcripts).

The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) allows licensed RNs to practice in other participating NLC states and territories without obtaining additional licenses. Currently, 43 states participate in the NLC. See NLC map at…NLC Map.

The BSW degree from any CSWE-accredited program makes degree holders eligible to apply to take the licensing exam in states other than Texas, but historically, there must be a license in each state in order to practice.
