Out-of-State Licensure and Certification Disclosure

Out-of-State Licensure and Certification Disclosure

The information below indicates whether Lamar University’s professional licensure programs meet the educational requirements for licensure or certification in each state.

Lamar University programs that lead to professional licensure or certification are explicitly designed to meet the requirements for licensure in Texas. While some programs may also satisfy licensure requirements in other states, state licensure agencies may require additional components.

Students are to contact the requisite academic department with questions about achieving licensure in their state prior to applying for admission to the program.

Relocating Mid-Program

If you are approved to enroll in a program out-of-state, you must notify your academic department prior to moving to a new state to ensure licensure is possible.

For more information, review Lamar University's Student Location Policy.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Meets: Dishman School of Nursing Licensure/Certification Qualifications List

To obtain an RN license, candidates must pass a national licensure examination (NCLEX‑RN) administered by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Graduates from all U.S. states and territories take the same examination.

Graduates of our program may apply for initial RN licensure in Texas or in any other U.S. state. When applying for licensure outside of Texas, graduates submit a state‑specific application to the appropriate Board of Nursing, along with required documentation (e.g., official transcripts).

The Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) allows licensed RNs to practice in other participating NLC states and territories without obtaining additional licenses. Currently, 43 states participate in the NLC. See NLC map at…NLC Map.

Bachelor of Social Work

Meets: The Bachelor of Social Work degree is accredited through the national Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). The BSW degree from any CSWE-accredited program makes degree holders eligible to apply to take the licensing exam in states other than Texas, but historically, there must be a license in each state in order to practice. Please contact the department for more information.

Master of Science in Nutrition

Meets: No State - please contact the Department Chair for more information about licensures.

Completion of this program alone does not qualify a student for registration or licensure as a dietitian. To become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD/RDN), individuals must complete an ACEND-accredited supervised practice experience, earn a graduate degree, and pass the national registration examination.

State licensure requirements vary and may include additional criteria. Students should review requirements for the state in which they intend to practice:
